Apple’s iPad app of the year, Snapseed, coming to Mac and Android tablets | VentureBeat

Snapseed is awesome!  Hands down the best user interface out there.

Card Case: The new payments app that foretells a world without cash and credit cards

Slate:

The version of Card Case that allows for such automatic payments is being launched today. (And for now, it’s exclusively for the iPhone.) But Square installed a pre-release version on my phone earlier this week. I used it at a couple of small stores in San Francisco. In one case, I walked into Pinkie’s Bakery and asked for a cupcake. The cashier told me my total, and I said, “Put it on Farhad’s tab.” She saw my name and photo on her iPad, tapped it, and I was done. A receipt was sent to my phone. The experience was magical—almost creepily so. It happened so quickly, and lacked so many of the hassles of a normal transaction, that when I left the store with the cupcake it was hard not to feel like I’d just pulled off a heist.

This isn’t a straight-up photo, but a 3D map.  Apple bought the company that does this, probably to improve their mapping software.
9to5Mac:
C3 Technologies creates incredibly high-quality and detailed 3D maps with virtually no input from humans. The 3D mapping is camera based and the technology picks up buildings, homes, and even smaller objects like trees. C3′s solution comes from declassified missile targeting methods.

50GB Dropbox for FREEEEEEE!

Well, technically free.  I think you have to sign up for AppSumo (it’s a free service…kind of like Groupon for geeks).  I subscribed a while ago and it’s cool.  You get one email per day with the new deal.  It’s mostly software-related stuff for web designers, programmers, start-ups, etc.  Discounts are typically at least half off.

Anyway, this 50GB Dropbox thing is FOR LIFE!  AppSumo is giving away 10 of them.  Sweeeeet!

Vocre from myLanguage

You speak into your iPhone when it’s upright, and then when you turn your iPhone horizontal, it will say what you said in a different language.

Vocre:

Vocre [voh-krey] is a new translation app from myLanguage that allows anyone to communicate instantly with anybody from anywhere – without language being a barrier. With a new spin on usability, this app is our first step in helping the world communicate more easily. ~ Keep an eye out for some new exciting features. Our world is full of people worth talking to. Now, with Vocre, nothing’s holding you back.

Are computers the cheap, new journalists? | The Week

The Week:

Northwestern professors devise a program that can write original news articles in under a minute, for about $10 a pop

Is it really that good?

Customers and linguists seem impressed. Here’s the opening sentence from a news brief on an in-progress college football game earlier this month: “Wisconsin appears to be in the driver’s seat en route to a win, as it leads 51-10 after the third quarter.” And the algorithm is getting better as more companies use the program. “In five years, a computer program will win a Pulitzer Prize,” predicts Hammond, “and I’ll be damned if it’s not our technology.”

JPEGmini Shrinks Photos' File Sizes Online, Without Reducing Quality

JPEGmini Shrinks Photos' File Sizes Online, Without Reducing Quality

Lifehacker:

Free webapp JPEGmini can quickly take your JPEG images and reduce their file sizes by up to 80%—all within your browser and while preserving their image quality.

We’ve previously featured great image compression tools like RIOT that serve the same purpose, but JPEGmini is unique in that you don’t have to install anything. It works very simply and surprisingly fast: upload your image and the webapp automatically compresses it, showing you a side-by-side view of the original and the compressed image.

The app only works with JPEGs, but it’s handy for quickly shrinking your photo sizes so you can email them faster. The file size savings can be very dramatic.

Registering for a free account gives you more features like uploading full albums and sharing on Picasa and Flickr.
